Betting on Greyhounds

Greyhound racing is said to be one of the most predictable kinds of racing. Placing a bet is relatively easy; one decides on the amount of the bet, the type (to win, place, show, and so forth), and the post position (the dog's number).

Wager Types

To win the Daily Double, the bettor must pick the winners of the first and the second races. Naturally, the bet must be placed in advance of the bell for the first race.

To win the Quiniela (known as the Reverse Forecast in Great Britain), the bettor must pick two dogs to finish first and second, in either order, in any single race. To bet you say "$2 quiniela, numbers 5 and 6." If the results of the first two greyhounds are either 5-6 or 6-5, you win.

To play the Quiniela Box, the bettor needs to pick three dogs. The bet wins if any two of the three end the race first and second. A "$2 quiniela box on 1, 2 and 3" is actually three separate $2 bets, so the cost would be $6. The bettor wins if they finish 1-2, 1-3, 3-1, 3-2, 2-1 or 2-3. It is possible to box as few as three or the entire field.

The Quiniela Double is a combination bet of two winning quinielas in the day's last two races. The bettor must choose two dogs to come in first and second, in either order, in each of the last two races.

A Quiniela Wheel means that a bet for a favorite dog is combined with bets for all the other dogs. A $2 wheel in a field of six dogs would cost $12.

The Perfecta (also known as the Exacta, or, in Great Britain, the Straight Forecast) is similar to the Quiniela, except that the two dogs must finish in the exact order specified in the bet.

A Perfecta Box is similar to the quiniela box, except that the two dogs must finish in the exact order. A $2 perfecta box is actually six separate bets, so your minimum cost is $12. A $2 perfecta box on 4 greyhounds would cost $24.

To win the Straight Trifecta (also known as the Tricast or Treble Forecast in Great Britain) one must choose three dogs to finish in the exact order specified.

A Trifecta Box means that the bettor is choosing three dogs to finish first, second and third, in any order. A $1 trifecta box on three dogs is really six $1 bets, so the cost is $6.

By placing a Trifecta Key, the bettor is choosing a specific dog to win, and two or more others to place and show in any order. The cost of a $1 trifecta key is $2, since it is actually two $1 bets.

One wins a Superfecta by choosing four dogs to finish in an exact order.
